The state government has sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for the 20th anniversary convention of the Association of Kannada Kootas of America (AKKA).

The Association had sought Rs two crore for the biennial event scheduled to be held from August 31 to September 2 at Sheraton Convention Centre in Dallas, Texas, USA.

Kannada and Culture Minister Jayamala said on Sunday that Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy would not be attending the event due to the floods in Kodagu.

“The Kannada and Culture department was asked to send artistes to perform at the event. However, owing to the floods in Kodagu, we have not been able to select the artistes. The department will not be taking any artistes for the event this time,” she added.

Jayamala said it was necessary to sanction funds to organisations that represent Kannada.
