As many as 14 couples entered wedlock in a mass wedding organised under Karnataka Saptapadi Vivah Yojana, a mass marriage scheme of the Religious Endowment (Muzarai) department, atop the Chamundi Hill on Monday.

Chamundeshwari MLA G T Devegowda called upon the people not to get trapped in a debt trap for a wedding. Starting a new life in a temple is sacred. More number of people should be part of mass marriages, he said.

Devegowda said that even his children entered into wedlock in a simple manner in a mass marriage at Tirupati. “I had organised simple mass marriages at Hunsur and mass marriages are much suitable for the present situation,” he said.

Devegowda asked the newly-wed couples to take care of their in-laws and parents. Treat them in a respectful manner and face any situation together, he said.

The next mass marriage programme will be held on April 22 in Nanjangud, on May 13 in Mudukutore, June 17 in Chamundi Hills, and on July 7 in Nanjangud. The marriages will take place only if the parents of both the bride and the groom are present during the ceremony. The age of the bride must be 18 years or above and the groom must be 21 years or above. The scheme is applicable only for marriages in Hindu religion.

The brides and grooms, willing to get married under the mass marriage scheme, should register at their respective taluk office. The beneficiaries must submit personal details along with the documents, during registration, said an officer.

Chamundeshwari temple chief priest N Shashishekara Dixit and Nanjangud Srikanteshwara temple chief priest Nagachandra Dixit performed the marriage.

Zilla Panchayat president Parimala Shyam, Kannada Book Authority Nandish Hanche, Mysore Paints and Varnish Limited (MPVL) Chairman N V Phaneesh, Zoo Authority of Karnataka Chairman L R Mahadevaswamy and Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri were present.
