Innovations must for betterment of humanity, says science centre chief

District Science Centre Honorary President A N Mahesh said more and more innovations are needed for the betterment of humankind and called for further research in agriculture.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the district-level science exhibition competition held on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Belagavi-based Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Institution at Morarji Desai Residential PU College on Friday, he said the agricultural sector is facing a shortage of human resources today. There is a need to carry out agricultural activities using modern technology, he felt.

He said the global temperature should be balanced by making use of the naturally available power. The rising temperature can be controlled by using solar power and other renewable sources of energy, he added.

Inaugurating the programme, District Social Welfare Officer H V Manjunath called upon students to develop scientific temper. District Backward Classes Welfare Officer Manjunath said scientific innovations are going on to simplify human life. But, there is a need for in-depth research in this regard. It is a good development that a sub-regional science centre will be established in Chikkamagaluru under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner, he noted.

Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat Executive Committee Member T G K Urs said two best teams from urban and rural categories each, taking part in the science model exhibition, will be selected for the state level competition.

Students from primary schools exhibited models on renewable sources of energy and pollution control. High School students had prepared models related to Applied Mathematics, preservation of biodiversity. PU and degree college students displayed models on smart city, information and communication and satellites.

District Science Centre President H M Neelakanthappa, Vice President K V Kallesh, Secretary C H Nagaraj, office-bearers Omkarappa, Satyanarayana, Thyagaraj, Principal Shivakumar and lecturer Vijayakumar and others were present.
