Inter-zonal sports meet in Maharaja's kicks off today

The Maharaja’s College will organise an inter-collegiate, inter-zonal men’s sports meet from March 10 to 12 in the city.

Addressing media, on Wednesday, College Principal B Nagaraja Murthy said, the annual event was organised in association with the Physical Education department, University of Mysore.

As many as 900 sportspersons from 39 colleges under five zones of the university — Krishnaraja (Mysuru), Chamundi (Mysuru rural), Mandavya (Mandya), Hassan (Malnad) and Chamaraja (Chamarajanagar), are expected to take part in the meet. As many as 139 technical staff have been roped in for the job.

The events include cricket, handball, kabaddi, chess, ball badminton, carom, basketball, football and kho-kho. They will be conducted at the sports pavilion and Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Stadium, popularly known as Gangotri Glades at Manasagangotri. Accommodation for outstation sports persons has been arranged at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry and pavilion at the varsity.

Director of department of Physical Education P Krishnaiah said, overall champions will pocket a cash prize of Rs 15,000. “Postgraduate Sports Council, Manasagangotri, had emerged champions during the previous meet,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa will inaugurate the meet on March 10 at 9 am at the Sports Pavilion. Syndicate member H Ramesh will be the chief guest. The valedictory session is planned on March 12 at 11.30 am. Registrar C Basavaraju and Syndicate member D Nanjundaiah will be distribute the prizes. Administrative officer Vasanth will be present.
