The police opened fire at an offender for attacking police personnel in a bid to escape, near Handanahalli Gate in Hunsur taluk, late on Tuesday.

Bilikere police sub-inspector Jayaprakash opened fire at Jayanth V Gowda, 23, of Mandya town. Jayanth attacked Head Constable Ravi and constable B R Ravi, in a bid to escape from them. Thus, the SI opened fire at him as self-defence.

Jayanth and two others, Vignesh, 24, of Chiranahalli in Mandya, and Deepak, 23, of Ramakrishna Nagar in Mysuru, had attacked a KSRTC bus driver near Bolanahalli, under Bilikere police station limits, on January 21. Following the incident, the trio had fled. Thus, the police had formed a team to nab them.

The police arrested them at Molakalmuru in Chitradurga district and were bringing them to Bilikere Police station, when Jayanth tried to attack the policemen.

According to Superintendent of Police C B Ryshyanth, SI Jayaprakash opened fire at the suspect in self-defence. Though the SI fired two rounds in the air, the suspect continued to attack the police personnel with a wooden log. Thus, the SI had to open fire at Jayanth.

During the interrogation, the suspect has revealed a murder case. Jayanth and Vignesh, along with Sagar and Prajwal, have killed one Anush Joy over personal enmity at a lodge in Mandya. They disposed the body near the old bridge near River Cauvery at Srirangapatna in Mandya district.
