Ilegal liquor seized

The Excise Department officials illegal liquor and beer, worth more than Rs 1 crore, stocked in Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district, Kerur and Nargund in Bagalkot late on Thursday night.

The excise officials seized beer cases worth Rs 14.80 lakh from a warehouse of Karnataka State Beverages Corporation in Honnavar on Thursday night.

Assistant Commissioner (Excise) L A Manjunath said 9,064 litres of beer were found in 1,150 boxes and the bar codes of the beer cases did not scan. Also, there was a mismatch between the labels mentioned in the original invoice and this amounts to the violation of excise rules. All this was detected during inspection and the investigation is on, he added.

Meanwhile, The excise officials have seized liquor, allegedly stocked at Kerur in Badami taluk in Bagalkot district, late on Thursday night.

Liquor and beer bottles, worth over Rs 14.23 lakh, were found during an inspection at a shop owned by Basavaraj Sangappa Bannur at Kerur. A case has been registered against Bannur.

According to a press release from the deputy commissioner’s office, the excise officials also seized illegal liquor, worth Rs 72 lakh, at Achamatti station in Nargund taluk in Bagalkot Lok Sabha constituency.

Rs 50 lakh seized in Hosadurga

The election personnel seized Rs 50 lakh, which was being transported without proper documents in a car, at Hosadurga in Chitradurga district.

The transport of the money came to light when the election staffers were inspecting the vehicles passing through Ahmed Nagar checkpost in Hosadurga taluk. The money was found in the car belonging to retired deputy registrar Krishnamurthy.

The police said Krishnamurthy has given a statement that he got the money after the sale of land. However, the money was seized as he could not provide proper documents, they said.
