Dear Madam,

I am an engineering student currently in the 7th semester (ECE branch). I want to pursue MS in Data Science or Networking in Germany, Canada or Ireland. My first option is TU Munich, Germany for masters in data engineering. I have got a score of 305 in GRE and 7 band in IELTS test. I can spend around Rs 10 lakh for the course inclusive of my accommodation and tuition fee. Could you help me with more information on universities that I can apply to? Is there any possibility of getting a scholarship at TU Munich?

Anusha Agnihotri

Dear Anusha,

Germany is a very affordable country but it is also highly competitive to get into universities such as TU Munich. If possible, re-take the GRE and improve your scores. I would also recommend you join the Goethe Institute and learn German language. Even though the programme is entirely in English, when you want to avail high-quality education for a nominal fee, you must show your eagerness to study in their country by learning the local language. This will also help you in the job market. For more information on entry requirement, application process, fees and scholarship at TU Munich, visit https://bit.ly/2Iezlev.

In Canada, many universities offer MS in Data Science but the tuition fee will be in the range of 10 to 30 lakh and then the accommodation and living expenses will be another 8 to 10 lakh. Some of the well-known universities for Data Science are Waterloo, University of British Columbia, Ryerson and Simon Fraser.

In Ireland, again you have many universities like University College Cork, University College Dublin, National University of Ireland and Dublin City College offering data science but the tuition fees will be in the range of 15 to 25 lakh and living expenses will be around 10 lakh. You could apply for scholarships and also work part-time to take care of some of your living expenses. Dear Madam,

I am pursuing my engineering in telecommunication. I want to pursue my MS in Germany, Canada or US in VLSI or Network security. Can you suggest good universities that offer scholarships and future job opportunities? I am also interested in pursuing MBA along with MS.

Sharath R

Dear Sharath,

German universities such as Technical University of Darmstadt, RWTH Aachen, University of Freiburg and TU Munich offer VLSI and Network Security programs.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Concordia University Montréal, University of Winnipeg are some of the Canadian universities that offer Masters in Network Security.

In the US, we have Georgia Tech, Cornell, Michigan Ann Arbor, Carnegie Mellon, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Purdue, University of California LA, University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State University, University of Southern California and University of Texas at Austin, which are known for VLSI and Network security programs.

To qualify for an MBA, you would need three years of work experience. Scholarships will depend on your academic credentials while your people skills are what is most important in the job market.

Dear Madam,

My daughter is studying MSc food and nutrition course at NIN, Hyderabad. She is interested in doing PhD abroad with fund support. Kindly suggest.

Veerabhaskar

Dear Parent,

University of Texas A&M, Pennsylvania State University, Rutgers, Purdue, Drexel, Urbana Champaign, North Carolina State University, University of California Davis are excellent for food science and nutrition. Your daughter has to research these university websites thoroughly, find an area of research that she is passionate about and write to the professors. If they are convinced about her research topic and her ability to contribute significantly to their department, they will be happy to fund her studies. The universities I have suggested above are all in the US. She should research universities across the world and find the one that is the best fit for her.

Dear Madam,

I am doing diploma in ITES. I want to study abroad but I am not sure what to do. Can you suggest a suitable course and country?

Arun

Dear Arun,

I am guessing your diploma is a three-year course, unlike a regular BE or BTech which is a four-year course. If you want to go abroad right away before completing your diploma, you would join an undergraduate program like BE in a country abroad. If you want to go after completing one year, you could get some transfer credits and move to year 2 of your Bachelor’s program. If you finish your diploma and then go abroad, you can do a one-year foundation abroad which will then help you progress to your masters.

Dear Madam,

My daughter is in the 3rd semester of Computer Science engineering. She wants to pursue MS after graduation. Please advise courses, which would make her industry-ready. Also suggest tests she has to take, availability of university scholarships, approximate cost per annum without scholarships and duration of MS in Singapore, Switzerland, Germany and other countries?

GP

Dear GP,

Popular specialisation options after Bachelors in Computer Science Engineering include Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Computer Systems and Software, Digital Signal Processing, Electrical Energy, Electromagnetics, Electronic Design & Applications, Microelectronics / Microsystems, Optics & Photonics, Systems & Controls, Telecommunications, VLSI Systems and Digital Design among others. MS in Singapore, Switzerland and Germany would be for a duration of 2 years. She would have to write the GRE and an English test such as TOEFL iBT or IELTS. The best universities in Singapore for MS in Computer Engineering are Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore. In Switzerland, ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne are good for Computer and Electrical engineering.

Germany is a dream location for most students who wish to pursue Electrical engineering. Students get long stay visas, education is free or very nominal in most universities. Internship opportunities and job placements are available to every student. For more information on study in Germany, visit www.study-in.de/en and www.daaddelhi.org. Other countries that offer affordable education are UK and New Zealand. In both these countries, the duration of a master’s program would be for one year and the entire cost of the program including living expenses would work out to around 20 lakh before scholarship.
