Reading is the foundation of learning
According to the 2018 Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), Indian students in Class five can only read textbooks meant for Class two students. The 2021 report showed that only 9.8% of Class three students can read a Class two level text. This signifies that students are not getting the quality of education they deserve. In an effort to improve the situation and promote reading culture, the Department of School Education and Literacy recently launched the ‘100 days of reading campaign’.

Creative ways to teach math
There is a crisis of creativity in our school education. More so in mathematics. Our children constantly complain about how ‘boring and dull’ the mathematics classes are and for the right reasons. Repeated application of routine algorithms to solve mathematical problems can be either daunting or repulsive depending on the child’s mindset. It is ironic that we are supposed to be teaching them mathematics as it is ‘useful’!

Learning loss is not new. After summer vacations or prolonged, unforseen holidays, evidence suggests that students forget what they have learned without revision. Generally, a short recap of earlier learning is the current practice at the beginning of a new semester. The pandemic is an extreme case of learning loss. There is a stark loss at both the school and the university level despite online education.
