Two classrooms of Government Higher Primary School at Bittenahalli in Kadur taluk are facing the threat of collapse.

Barring these two classrooms, the classes are held for Class 1 to 5 in four other
rooms. The roof of the two classrooms has collapsed. The wooden logs used for the roof are dangling. The windows are fully damaged and the walls have developed cracks. The students play near these classrooms.

The school comes under Thimlapura Gram Panchayat in Panchanahalli hobli. The students of Class 1 to 3 are made to sit in a single room. The classes for Classes 4 and 5 are held in another room. There are four teachers in the school. The school has a strength of 52 students.

There are 200 houses in the village. A majority of the students, who are admitted to the school, hail from poor families.

School Development and Monitoring Committee President B R Basavaraju said, “We have appealed to the BEO to demolish the classrooms which are in deplorable condition. No action has been taken in this regard. Who will be responsible if the wall collapses when children play nearby?” he asked.

The two classrooms have been locked. A fence has been laid to prevent the children from entering the two classrooms, Headmaster Chandrashekar said. He said parents have already started admitting their children to convents. As a result, only two children have been admitted to the Class 1 in this academic year, Chandrashekar added.

When contacted, Deputy Director of Public Instruction C Prasanna Kumar said, “The condition of the classrooms has already come to my notice. I have directed the BEO to take measures to demolish the classrooms. A proposal will be submitted to the government for the construction of new classrooms.”
