Rescuers found the 16-year-old boy on the roof of his house in the hard-hit city of Ishinomaki, calling out for help, according to the Miyagi Prefectural Police. He then led rescuers inside, where they found an 80-year-old woman. Both were weak but conscious.
National broadcaster NHK showed a helicopter taking the two to a nearby hospital.
The quake and ensuing tsunami that devastated Japan’s northeastern coast killed more than 8,100 people, with 12,000 still missing. Another 452,000 have been displaced and are living in shelters.
