All telcos, except Jio, fail Trai's call drop test

Most telecom operators, except Reliance Jio, failed to meet call drop benchmark in a test conducted by TRAI on select highways and rail routes across the country.

Though different mobile phone service providers network performance differed on highways, only Jio met call drop benchmark on the three rail routes where the test was conducted, said a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report.

"Only RJio is meeting quality of service benchmark of drop call rate...," the report said.

According to the quality of service rules, not more than 2 % of total calls in a telecom circle on a network should automatically get disconnected.

Railway routes between Allahabad-Gorakhpur, Delhi-Mumbai and Jabalpur-Singrauli were covered.

The highways covered by the test were Asansol to Gaya, Digha to Asansol, Gaya to Danapur, Bengaluru to Murdeshwar, Raipur to Jagdalpur, Dehradun to Nainital, Mount Abu to Jaipur and Srinagar to Leh.

"On Bangalore to Murudeshwar highway, all the telecom service providers have met the benchmark of not more than 2% of drop call rate except Vodafone (2G) & Idea (3G),” said the TRAI report.

The report said Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTL), which is in the process of merging mobile business with Airtel, failed to even complete call connection as per benchmark on Bengaluru-Murudeshwar highway.

The regulator said the test was conducted to assess the network quality provided by cellular mobile phone service providers for voice services only. The key performance indicators were assessed for the network of all telecom service providers operating in the region.
