An infant who was trapped for several hours inside a dirty drainage pipe of a train toilet lavatory after being flushed down died late on Sunday night.

The baby was rescued from the toilet lavatory of the Howrah mail at the Amritsar railway station. The faecal matter and dirty water that was discharged in the lavatory kept falling on the new-born. Sources indicate that the baby boy was flushed out in the train toilet reportedly by the mother.

The cleaning staff at the railway station swung into action after the train lavatory got chocked.

The baby was noticed trapped inside the flush and was pulled out. The infant showed signs of life and was rushed to a railway hospital and was then referred to a civil hospital as it was in a critical state.

The infant was on Sunday moved to a super speciality hospital in Amritsar, where doctors frantically attempted to save his life.

But the baby breathed his late on Sunday night. According to doctors, the infant initially suffered from hypothermia. He was bleeding from within due to blood vessel rupture.

Sources said that some faecal matter and dirty water went inside the body of the infant while he was trapped inside the lavatory.

Doctors struggled to remove the dirt from his body. The baby was never out of danger in the neo-natal unit of the hospital, the doctors who treated the infant said.

While the police have registered a case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the IPC, the police suspect that the crime was committed by the mother of the child.

The police are examining a CCTV footage to bring the guilty to justice.

Sources said that some of the railway and the cleaning staffers remained at the hospital round-the-clock praying for the life of the new-born but to no avail.
