AirHelp, an online startup which works to secure compensation to passengers for delayed, cancelled or overbooked flights has ranked the Rajiv Gandhi International in Hyderabad airport as the eighth best airport in the world.

The company has used three parameters to judge the airports and finalise on the rankings. The parameters include on-time performance (60 per cent), service quality (20 per cent) and food and shops (20 per cent). The final score is aggregated by combining the scores under each of the three categories.

The Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar was ranked the best airport in the world. The airport aggregated a score of 8.39 out of 10. The Tokyo International Airport and Athens international Airport finished second and third in the list aggregating points of 8.39 and 8.38.

The Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow topped the charts in terms on ‘On-time performance, while the Changi International Airport, Singapore and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad topped the charts in the other two categories.

‘We chose the airports based on the best known and most used airports - but we exclude airports that we are unable to get data for,’ the website read.

The London Gatwick Airport, London, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Toronto, Porto Airport, Porto, Paris Orly Airport, Paris, Manchester Airport, Manchester were some of the airports made the list for the worst airports in the list. The New Jersey Hub was ranked as the worst airport in the United States of America in 2019.

A major reason is weather-related delays, said AirHelp CEO Henrik Zillmer while talking about the low performance of American airports with regards to on-time performance, they are a huge problem for American airports, compared to European ones.

“If you have the slightest amount of snow at the John F Kennedy International Airport, the airport will close,” Zillmer, said, referring to the New York hub that ranked 86th.
