Tumakuru student is CBSE state topper

Last Updated 06 May 2019, 19:23 IST

A daily commute of 60 kms to school every day would make most students wilt, but not Yashas D. Undeterred by the daunting commute, not to mention his father’s illness, young Yashas showed that he is made of sterner stuff, as he made the state proud in CBSE Class X results.

An unassuming student from Thammanahalli in Chikkanayakanahalli Taluk, Tumakuru district, Yashas has not just topped the state but has also emerged as the topper for the Chennai region in the CBSE Class 10 exams, results for which were announced on Monday.

A student of Vidyavaridhi International School in Huliyar, Yashas secured 498 marks out of 500. The school is run by former MLA Kirankumar.

Yashas comes from a family of agriculturalists. With his father Devraj unwell, Yashas also takes care of him while his sister is pursuing engineering in a college in Bengaluru.

Yashas turned the long commute to school, located 30 kms from his home, into his advantage by using the time spent on the bus to study.

“I was studying whenever I found the time and did not have a fixed timetable, he said.

“Concentrating in class and discussing with teachers whenever I had doubts helped me excel. I will opt for a PCMC seat,” he said.

His mother Nethravathi is overwhelmed with joy on her son’s finest hour. Speaking about her son’s achievement, she said, “It is a proud moment for me. He has always been a topper in school. He was not whiling away time. He slept just six hours a day. His hard work has borne fruit,” she said.
Yashas has now set his sights on IITs.

Success eclipses tragedy

Yashas’s performance has come as a relief for Vidyavaridhi International School. In March 2017, the school found itself at the centre of a controversy when four people including three students died of alleged food poisoning.

Great day for B’luru schools
It was a big day for Presidency School, South, in Bengaluru, as students Aishwarya Hariharan Iyer and Naladala Disha Chowdary secured 497 out of 500. The score was equalled by students of two other schools. Prithvi P Shenoy from Vidyaniketan Public School, Ullal, and K V Pranav, a student of Sri Chaitanya Techno School, J P Nagar, also scored 497.

Shivalli’s daughter excels

Late minister C S Shivalli’s daughter Roopa, who wrote the English paper on the day of her father’s cremation, scored 76% in Class X.
