Karnataka: Karnataka Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan has courted a controversy by calling Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy 'Kaaliya', a racist slur for being dark complexion.
The bypoll in Channapatna is being contested by C P Yogeshwar of the Congress, and Nikhil Kumaraswamy of the JD-S BJP alliance.
Tied to the outcome are the fates of several heavyweights in Karnataka.
Can this bypoll determine the future of politics in the state?
Sujay BM reports from Channapatna.
Congress and alliance partners BJP-JD(S) have their fingers crossed ahead of the counting of votes for Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur bypoll, which may determine the political road ahead for the parties in Karnataka.
Early trends show the ruling Congress leading in Sandur segment, and BJP and JD(S) ahead in Shiggaon and Channapatna constituencies respectively, as the counting of votes is underway for bypolls held in three Assembly segments in Karnataka.
All three seats are being led by the parties that previously held them.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A. Even with a close fight, BJP candidate Bharath Bommai's lead reaches 1,835 votes after Round 5 of counting of votes. Bommai secures 27,432 votes, while Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan of Congress gets 25,597 votes.
After second round of counting of votes, Bharath Bommai of BJP leads, with 11,185 votes in total. Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan of Congress trails by 1,139 votes, securing 10,046 votes.
“The Congress’ use of power and money has had an influence over nine rounds of counting. But I’m confident that Bharath will re-establish his lead over the remaining 10 rounds of counting," says Basavaraj Bommai on his son Bharath trailing in Shiggaon.
Ruling Congress in Karnataka was ahead in all three -- Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur -- Assembly segments.
Congress has been maintaining a steady lead in Sandur, since counting began earlier in the day and it has now also emerged as the front-runner in Channapatna and Shiggaon segments, where JD(S) and BJP were leading earlier, according to Election Commission numbers.
A defeat this time will make it 3 election losses on the trot for Nikhil Kumaraswamy.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said- "By-elections for three assembly constituencies have been held. I knew that we would win all three seats and we did...The BJP claimed they would win all three seats and alleged many lies against our government and guarantees. They raised the MUDA issue and Waqf issue...We defeated the BJP and JD(S), even after they joined hands and levelled numerous allegations against us. They resorted to fake allegations and a misinformation campaign was spread against us. The Prime Minister claimed that this is a wrong financial program yet they implemented a similar one in Jharkhand. The Maharashtra government even advertised, saying the Siddaramaiah government hasn’t implemented the five guarantees. I said I would retire and leave politics if those guarantees weren’t fulfilled..."
