Kannada lyrics

MES Kalavedi chose R A Ramamani to perform in this year’s P T Narasimhachar memorial endowment. Veteran poet P T Narasimhachar's lyrics are known for its musical quality and Ramamani presented them with telling effect.

‘Kolalanoodu Govinda’ in the initial stage, gave Ramamani a bright start. ‘Ako shyama’ with nerval was delineated with aplomb. The ‘Yamuneya baladolu’ was sung in majestic ‘Vilamba kaala’ and dignified in its form. ‘Padumanabhana hridaya’ is known to connoisseurs already. Ramamani sang with good feeling and the connoisseurs enjoyed it throughout. Nalina Mohan on Violin, Ranjani Siddanthi on Mrudanga and Sukanya Ramgopal on Ghata accompanied her.

A dancer from Delhi

Ragini Chandrasekhar, who gave a Bharathanatyam recital last week, is the daughter of senior dancer Jamuna Krishna and has been trained by many veterans, including K N Dakshinamoorthy Pillai.

A post-graduate in English, Ragini has performed in many parts of the world and is training young aspirants at the ‘Kalangan Centre for Classical Arts,’ New Delhi.

Raagini opened her programme with Pushpanjali (Naata Raga) customarily.

Interpretation of the well-knit Varna (Swamiye - ragamalike) was proof of her good training and she exhibited maturity in both Nritha and Nrithya. Her Abhinaya in the Astapadi (Sabhiye) and the Bhajan (Baso more) attracted with good expression and concluded her recital with a tillana. S Shankar (Natuvanga), Sudha Raghuraman (Vocal), Chandrasekharan (Mridanga), Raghuraman (Flute) and Akkarai Subbalakshmi (Violin) - shared the honours.

Sangathi

Three vocal and one instrumental (flute) recitals were held in the Sangathi serial of the Ananya last week. S V Narayan, a student of Vijaya College of Music, gave a vocal concert here on Thursday last. He was well supported by B K Raghu on Violin, by Tumkur B Ravishankar on Mridanga and Bharadwaj Sathavalli on Morsing. The varna set the tone for a steady pace. The ‘Shankari Shankuru’ bristled with meaningful nerval and lively Swara, while the ‘Ramabhadra rara’ was evocative. Though ‘Yeti janma’ is a majestic composition, fell short in its aesthetic appeal.

Narayan's talent and presentation is already known to music lovers of Bangalore. He tried his best to elevate the concert as vindicated in the ‘Swararagasudha.’ Yet it is apparent that he is short of meeting the demands. With his talent, hard practice and some more stage experience he can reach great heights, soon.

A fitting felicitation

K N Krishna Murthy (83), veteran percussionist, was felicitated by his disciples and admirers. He is a senior Ghata player and an able teacher, who has trained a number of students. He is a recipient of Sangeetha Nritya Academy award and the title 'Ganakalabhushana'. The students presented to him a special volume called ‘Krishna kaumudi’ and a short documentary called ‘Krishna samhitha.’

A special pallavi composed on K N Krishna Murthy was presented by Mathur Srinidhi on Violin. The Kalyani Pallavi ‘Laya Kalashree Krishnamurthy’ bristled well in Adithala. He was supported on Mridanga by Prashanth, on Khanjari by Karthik, on Ghata by N S Krishna Prasad and on Konakol by Somashekhar. It was a fitting felicitation to a senior guru.
