The garbage-cluttered City seems to have forgotten Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Swachh Bharat within a day.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Ash gourds, rotting plantain leaves and stumps, vegetables, flowers, hay, dry leaves and leftover eatables were seen strewn across the City roads, on Sunday. The situation was worse in market areas.<br /><br />“Only 25 percent of the garbage has been cleared so far at KR Market. The whole area is stinking. The problem is not limited to the festival seasonalone. The situation has been bad since the heavy down pour last week. Nothing has been done to clear the mess,” said G M Diwakar, President of Flower Merchants’ Association, KR Market.<br /><br />Residents say that the situation is the same state every festival season, and the BBMP has not chalked out any plan. Garbage has not been collected door-to-door. <br /><br />The situation was the same in K R Market, JC Road, NR Colony, Malles- waram, Peenya, Magadi Road, Mysore Road, Rajajinagar or Koramanagala, to name a few.<br /><br />A huge pile of garbage was set on fire close to a vacant site, a few metres away from the BMTC bus station at Channammanakere Achchukattu on Sunday afternoon, said Rukmini, a resident of a nearby apartment.<br /><br />“Every time, BBMP states it will take action against violators and garbage will be better managed during the next festival season, but it never happens. It seems like it will take another week for the civic agency to clear up the mess,” said B Ashok, a resident of Malleswaram.<br /><br />Adding to this, N Selvan, a shopkeeper from Chickpet said that the whole area resembles a dump site, if the garbage is not picked up for even a day.<br /><br />“The officials should have deployed additional staff to clear the mess and paid them extra, because pourakarmikas often complain that they are not taken care of during festivals. But all this is never done because of which garbage is thrown around everywhere and piles up,” he said.<br /><br />However, BBMP Commissioner N Lakshminarayan said that garbage had been cleared in most parts of the City by Saturday afternoon. <br /><br />“Normally the BBMP clears over 2,000-3,000 tonnes of garbage, but during festivals the quantity doubles. And in case of market places, it is an additional 60 tonnes. Additional 40 pourakarmikas have been deployed in market areas. Some garbage is being sent to landfill sites while organic waste is being sent to Karnataka Compost Development Corporation,” he said.</p>
