Jung asks babus to get cracking on water, power issues

Bracing for the scorching days ahead, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday asked deputy commissioners to coordinate with various agencies on issues of water and power supply and submit ‘regular’ reports on civic issues in their districts.

Reviewing the functioning of the deputy commissioners, he said they should adopt a people-friendly approach and ensure time-bound delivery of services.

“You must not forget that civil servants are meant to serve the people. You must lead by example and inspire your staff to follow suit so that there is proper delivery of services to the public in your districts,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

With mercury soaring, he directed the deputy commissioners to pay special attention to shortage of water and electricity during the summers.

 The Lieutenant Governor also recommended coordination between governmental agencies to ensure that their districts are well-served and people are facilitated by their offices.

Jung urged the deputy commissioners to explore innovative solutions to problems in their districts, particularly those that they are likely to encounter in the coming summer months.

He also laid emphasis on field visits and instructed the deputy commissioners take necessary action based on ground reports submitted to them.

He also urged them to conceptualise the ideal position of their respective districts and submit a comprehensive plan to him within the next two weeks. 

He also highlighted the need to pay attention to issues related to traffic and other civic matters in their respective districts.

After the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor reviewed the presentation made by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority at the Raj Niwas.

‘White paper on water’ 

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief  Harsh Vardhan has demanded that Jung should issue a white paper on the present status of the water distributed through Delhi Jal Board as citizens were facing problems with the advent of summer.

The BJP leader said in a statement on Wednesday that the white paper should also throw light on private tankers and government tankers.

 He said that just after the onset of summer season, complaints of shortage of water, supply of contaminated water, supply of sewage mixed water and black marketing  of water by tanker drivers were being received.

Due to the tanker mafia, the ground water level in Delhi was falling by 10 feet every year.
