Delhi Police ignore core policing, Dikshit tells home minister

The never-ending tug-of-war between the city government and Delhi Police continues as chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday shot a letter to Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde accusing the police of “deviating from its core duties” and “indulging in blames games” while “trivialising” the issue of women safety.

She said in the letter that Delhi Police were not focusing on improving the law and order situation in the city.

“We would humbly like to request you to kindly look deep into the internal functioning of the police which currently have completely deviated from the core policing and are more interested in issues like unauthorised constructions and licensing,” says the letter.

“It would be kind of you to ask the police not to make an attempt to trivialise the issue of safety of women by shifting the blame to transport sector,” the letter adds.

Dikshit government also alleged that traffic police are the main agency responsible for enforcing the Motor Vehicle Act and Rules, and they hardly share any information with the transport department.

The relations between the Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar and Dikshit soured when the chief minister demanded his resignation following the brutal gang rape and subsequent death of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on December 16.

She also disagreed with the police cane-charging the protesters at India Gate.
Dikshit has even sought that Delhi Police be brought under the control of the city government instead of being under the home ministry.
