More people file property tax online in north Delhi

With a large number of urban households using the internet, more and more residents are depositing property tax online.

The number of online taxpayers under the jurisdiction of North Delhi Municipal Corporation has significantly increased since last year.

According to the North Corporation, 1.83 lakh people have paid property tax online, while 1.41 lakh people deposited tax over the counter in the last eight months.

The number of online tax payers till August is nearly 50,000 more than those in the corresponding period last year.

In 2011, 1.33 lakh people had opted for the online system, while 1.36 lakh people deposited tax in their respective offices.

“More people are paying tax online as they don’t have to visit offices and wait in long queues. The figure of online tax collection has shown considerable improvement,” said standing committee deputy chairman V P Pandey. 

“While Rs 53.29 crore was collected online as property tax, the amount has gone up to Rs 75.83 crore till August 24,” said Pandey.

A zone-wise break up of tax collected shows that the maximum number of online tax payers were from Rohini zone, followed by Karol Bagh and Civil Lines. While 92,138 people paid property tax online in Rohini, the figure in Karol Bagh and Civil Lines stood at 34,508 and 29,060 respectively.

The number of online tax payers in Rohini last year was 73,650, whereas in Karol Bagh and Civil Lines, it was 18,497 and 17,246 respectively.

Only the city zone — one of six zones of the North Corporation — has shown a decline in the number of people who deposited tax online.

Pandey said the North Corporation has collected over Rs 223 crore as property tax and transfer duty, compared to the budget target of Rs 652 crore till date for the current fiscal.
