Nokia 5.4 Android One: First impression

Last Updated 10 February 2021, 11:55 IST

HMD Global Oy on Wednesday (February 10) launched the Nokia 5.4 Android One series in India.

It succeeds the 5.3 series and comes with a major upgrade in terms of photography hardware. Prior to the launch, HMD Global delivered a review unit to the DH. Here's my initial impression of the new Nokia phone.

Design
Nokia 5.4 flaunts visually appealing stripes underneath the glossy smooth shell. The Polar Night with the dark blue shade looks really good in the sunlight. It has a circular camera module on the top and just below, you will find the capacitive fingerprint sensor and by the way, it has worked fine since I have started using it yesterday night.

On the front, it features a 6.39-inch HD+ (720 x 1520p) punch-hole display with a 2.5D curved glass design. It comes with an extra screen guard pre-fitted on top of the screen to protect against daily wear and tear. Also, the company is offering transparent silicone-based soft but sturdy shell cover in the retail box.

In the brief time I spent with the Nokia 5.4, I did not find any pressing issue while viewing contents.

Configuration
Nokia 5.4 houses 11nm class Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 octa-core processor backed by Adreno 610 GPU with 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB storage. It can be expanded up to 256GB through a microSD card. It should be noted that the company has made sure, there are three dedicated slots in the SIM tray to fit two SIMS (type: nano + nano) and storage card. With this, owners need not have to compromise on either the second SIM or the extra space to store photos and install numerous apps.

It runs Android 10 out-of-the-box. The interface is clean with no bloatware and this makes it easy for users, particularly for that first-time smartphone buyer to get the hang of the phone in a short time.

As the device is Android One Programme, it is expected to get the latest Android 11 soon. Also, assured to get longer software support for at least two years after the launch.

Camera
Nokia 5.4 houses a quad-camera module-- primary 48MP backed by 5MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP for macro with LED flash. On the front, it comes with a 16MP sensor.

It takes decent photos in the natural sunlight and also in low light under buildings' shadow, the phone was able to take detailed pictures. Check out the Jasmine flower (above); it looks really good with near-natural colour, commendable for its class.

However, I am curious to check how well the phone can capture images at night. Stay tuned for the detailed review next week.
