Bangalore Apartments Federation on Saturday launched a new initiative that hopes to set up at least 1,000 solar power plants across the city.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun launched ‘Bengaluru Apartments Making Bengaluru Operationally Outstanding and Sustainable’ (BAMBOOS) programme at BR Ambedkar Bhavan, Vasanth Nagar.

This initiative aims to mobilise residents living in apartment complexes across the city to adhere to sustainable practices such as reducing the dependency on electricity, having compost units and so on for a better Bengaluru.

One of the major initiative under BAMBOOS is to have apartment complexes install rooftop solar power plants, which can help in bringing down the burden of paying hefty electricity bills.

Speaking at the event, Gangambike said, “It is heartening to see that the residents of apartment complexes are coming forward with such initiatives. There was a time when I initially began my career as a Councillor where none of the residents used to come out even for voting purposes. The co-operation from apartment residents is very essential for BBMP to solve issues such as solid waste management.”

Urban expert V Ravichander opined that the BBMP can re-visit its plan to have a vendor empanelment to collect and dispose of segregated garbage on a daily basis.

The programme also included workshops on solid waste management, water and energy management.

It can also be recalled that a recent survey conducted by Velocity MR, a consumer research company, found that Bengaluru had the largest number of consumers in solar water heaters when compared to other metro cities in the country.
