BBMP to breathe life into 27 lakes soon

Last Updated 26 May 2019, 19:49 IST

The BBMP is set to take up work on the “comprehensive development” of lakes, including fixing the inlet and outlets, creating wetlands, islands and repairing existing bunds. In the first phase, 27 lakes will get the treatment.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials said the revival work also includes desilting to increase the water-holding capacity of the lakes, as a part of core developmental works. The state government has sanctioned Rs 348 crore for the rejuvenation project.

“We are going to focus on improving the natural ambience of the lakes and boost their ecology. Some lakes require measures to be taken for flood mitigation, which we will do. We are seeking suggestions from lake experts and citizen volunteers involved in lake revival activities of particular lakes to do these works,” said R L Parameshwariah, Chief Engineer, BBMP (Lakes).

The BBMP is also planning to install additional facilities at some lakes for tourism purposes including public toilets, fencing, children’s park, boating and other small parks. The lakes will be identified based on the requirements.

The BBMP will rejuvenate nine lakes in Mahadevapura zone, 13 in Bommanahalli zone, two in RR Nagar and three from Dasarahalli, Yelhanka and Bengaluru South.

“We are only going to do entry-level revival with respect to stormwater drains. We will set up diversion channels such that the sewage water is prevented from entering the water bodies,” said a BBMP official.

The tenders have been floated for the project and the works will begin as soon as the tenders are approved.

The lakes to be rejuvenated are: Kaggadasapura lake, Hoodi Giddanakere, Nagarabhavi lake, Jimkenahalli lake, Kalkere Rampura lake, Nagareshwara- Nagenahalli lake, Abbigere lake, Shivanahalli lake, Talghatapura lake, Mahadevapuralake, Mesthripalya lake, Nallurahalli lake, Byrasandra lake, Gunjur Palya lake, Basapura lake, Basavanapura lake, Chikka Begur lake, Devarakere, Doddakallasandra lake, Gowdana Palya, Gubbalalu lake, Hulimavu lake, Konappana Agrahara lake, Kammanahalli lake, Vasanthapura lake, Yelenahalli lake and Doddabidarakallu lake.

Ramprasad, co-founder, Friends of Lakes, said that the BBMP lakes department should coordinate with storm water drain department and the BWSSB to tackle any emerging issue in future related to floods, back-flow pollution etc.

“The desilting should be done such that the lake resumes to its original depth, instead of doing it for 1 to 2 metres. The lake DPR approval technical committee of KTCDA should involve ecologists, environmentalists and hydrogeologists coming up with better ideas,” he said.
