A 24-year-old call centre employee was arrested for assaulting a police constable when he intervened in a drunken brawl last Friday.

The arrested has been identified as Kiran, a resident of Domlur. He has been booked under IPC Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty).

According to the police, the incident happened around 11.45 pm on August 10 behind Parvathi Wines on the inner ring road in Domlur in Halasuru.

Head constable Mallayya and police constable Mugappa Sintri (Hoysala driver) were on patrolling duty when they received a message from the police control room. They were informed that a man identified as Raju was being assaulted near a bar. The Hoysala rushed to the spot. When Sintri intervened, the attacker started reining punches on him.

Sintri was beaten on his face and stomach before the assailant escaped from the spot. Later, with the help of the victim, Raju, and passersby who had gathered there, the policemen traced Kiran and picked him up.

Kiran was taken to the station and a case was registered against him. He was produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody. Further investigation is under way.
