Elderly woman dead as drain water enters house

A 54-year-old-woman was found dead after water from the stormwater drain entered her house, due to rain, in KP Agrahara in Bhuvaneshwari Nagar on late Thursday night.

The victim, Rathnamma, was alone when the incident happened.

Jagadish Kumar, her son, said as the house was close to the stormwater drain. During the rainy season, water from the drain would into the house and so his mother would stay with her sister in Marathahalli.

But on Thursday, the rain was unexpected and she had slept in the house before the rain. As she was diabetic, she was unable to walk out of the house. The incident came to light when he came to see her in the morning, he said.

Keshava Murthy, a resident of the locality, said there was heavy waterlogging around 9.30 pm and the drain water was overflowing and gushing inside 30 houses adjacent to it.

The fire and emergency services personnel also could not clear the blockage as the water was flowing with full force. In the morning, we noticed the woman’s body floating inside her house, he said.

The officials from fire and emergency services department said that they were not aware of the woman struck inside the house during their operation.

The local corporator visited the house in the morning, but neither the police nor the BBMP officials have paid any visit.

BBMP Mayor R Sampath Raj said that he was also not aware of the incident.

KP Agrahara police inspector S S Manju said neither the local residents nor her family members have approached the police and so no complaint was registered.
