HAL, ITI, HMT among top-20 tax defaulters

Many government buildings, along with those of private hospitals and educational institutions, are bleeding the BBMP by not paying property tax.

A list of 160 property tax defaulters, comprising the Top-20 from each of the eight zones, released by the Palike on Wednesday shows arrears of Rs 161.83 crore. Among the top defaulters are Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and ITI with arrears of Rs 25.09 crore and Rs 10.62 crore, respectively, to the BBMP.

The other major defaulters are HMT (Rs 14 crore), Karnataka Leasing Commercial Corporation (Rs 5.5 crore), Prestige Garden Construction (Rs 7.79 crore), RMZ Eco-Space (7.73 crore), Container Corporation of India (Rs 5.54 crore), Adarsh Prime Projects (Rs 3.97 crore), Salarpuria Touch Stone (Rs 3.14 crore), Wipro Limited (Rs 3.06 crore), PWD Guest House (Rs 2.69 crore), N A Krishna Reddy of Swagath Garuda Mall (Rs 4.02 crore), Dayananda Sagar Institute (Rs 3.52 crore), Dayananda Sagar Hospital (Rs 96 lakh), Abhishek Developers (Rs 6.69 crore), Big Bazaar - Malleswaram (Rs 3.34 crore), D Manikchand (Rs 2.47 crore), Rajath Enterprises (Rs 1.08 crore), Vaidehi Hospital (Rs 2.5 crore) and Savanna Hotel (Rs 2.41 crore).

The crorepati defaulters are Urban Edge Hotel, Vrundavana Tech Village, Centre Point Realty, Sigma Tech Park, BPL India, Chatur Realtors, BIP Developers, Sapphire Pre-Venture, M Vasantha Kumari, M R Kodandaram, Gemini Dyeing and Printing, Airports Authority of India and Gokul Education Foundation.

These defaulters time and again ignored the notices sent to them, said the BBMP press note.

The revenue loss is being incurred, despite BBMP introducing the GIS-based property identification mechanism.
