A group of undertrials at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison allegedly assaulted a fellow inmate hours before he was due for release on bail on Wednesday.

Syed alias Riyaz, Azmathullah, Syed Sameer, Riyaz and Syed Imran are accused of gashing the cheek and one of the ears of Amarnath alias Pepsi. The suspects and victim had been arrested on serious criminal charges.

Prison chief superintendent, V Sheshu Murthy, has filed a police complaint against the five with Parappana Agrahara police.

Murthy stated that the five prisoners picked an argument with Amarnath around 11.15 am, alleging he was staring at them. Things soon got out of hand, and the group attacked him. But before the group could harm Amarnath more, prison officials intervened and sent the five into their cells. Amarnath was treated at the prison hospital and released as per the bail conditions.

A senior prison officer suspected that the group assaulted Amarnath with a shaving razor commonly used by barbers in the jail.

Parappana Agrahara police have booked the five for rioting with deadly weapons and assault. "We are going to take them into custody after taking body warrants from the court. Further, necessary action will be taken," an officer said.
