Anil Menasinakai, the realtor who contested this year's Assembly election from Gadag on a BJP ticket, has lost Rs 2.87 crore in cash, which he had kept at his friend's house in Rajajinagar 3rd Block.

Menasinakai had lost the election to Congress' H K Patil.

Saroja Prabhu, sister of Menasinakai's friend V J Hariprasad, filed a complaint with the Rajajinagar police. She stated in the complaint that Menasinakai had given Rs 2.87 crore on April 19 for safekeeping.

She said the money was kept in an almirah. When Menasinakai came asking for the money after the May elections, they opened the almirah and found it missing.

Saroja said they suspect Veena, a relative who visited them twice, and her associates Nagaraj, Manju and Babu. She has asked the police to interrogate the four regarding the theft.

While admitting that the almirah was not forcefully opened, the police said it could have been the handiwork of someone close to the family. But they also raised suspicions on why the matter was reported three months after it happened, and not immediately.
