PhD aspirants protest at Bangalore University

Last Updated 15 March 2021, 20:05 IST

Thousands of PhD aspirants shut down Bangalore University’s Jnanabharathi campus by holding a protest.

They accused the varsity of violating the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms while holding the entrance test for PhD courses.

“The university had allowed the fourth-semester students also to appear for the entrance test, which is a clear violation of the UGC norms,” said the protesting students.

The university did not finish the admission process for PhD courses even after two years, the students said.

“The notification was issued in 2018 and the admissions are still going on. Surprisingly, for the second-round seat allotment, the varsity authorities have allowed those who skipped the first round of counselling, causing injustice to those who are waiting for several years,” they said.

The protesting students have submitted a memorandum to BU vice-chancellor Prof K R Venugopal and sent a copy to the Governor and the state higher education minister, urging them to consider their demands.
