<p>Additional District and Session Judge convicted Bhim Singh under Section 302 of IPC for murdering the girl, Neha, on the night of June 20, 2009.<br /><br />The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him and the convict will have to undergo further simple imprisonment for six months in case he failed to pay it. The convict was also sentenced under Section 309 of IPC to undergo one year's simple imprisonment for attempting to commit suicide.<br /><br />According to the prosecution, the convict, who was under the influence of liquor, had returned to his home on that night at around 2 AM and asked his mother about his daughter and son, both sleeping with their grandmother.<br /><br />He started beating his daughter with a wooden stick and ran away when family members and villagers assembled on spot.<br /><br />Singh climbed on an electric poll and tried to commit suicide but villagers foiled his attempt and took him and his daughter to hospital. His daughter succumbed to her injuries in the hospital while he recovered.<br /><br />The court examined 22 prosecution witnesses and Deputy District Attorney M S Kundal argued that there was sufficient circumstantial evidence to connect the accused with the crime.<br /><br />The defence counsel on the other hand argued that some dispute pertaining to property was going on between the convict and his father and during an altercation the daughter suffered injuries accidentally.<br /><br />The court held the accused guilty of murder and based the conviction mainly on the circumstantial evidence.</p>
