With the decision of co-producing the Indo-Canadian film Breakaway, Akshay Kumar has gone one step closer to sealing his longstanding bond with Canadian culture and his evergreen passion — sports. Crafted by acclaimed director Robert Lieberman, Breakaway is a cross-cultural hockey drama set in the Indo-Canadian community of suburban Toronto, Canada. The film follows a hero caught between a family’s traditional expectations and a dream to make it big in the national sport of his adopted country. Making sure he leaves no stone unturned in ensuring that his project has the best of both worlds, Akshay has roped in American actor Rob Lowe of The Outsiders and Square Dance fame.

Says a source, “Akshay was impressed with Lowe’s work on the sitcom Brothers and Sisters and thought that he would be apt to play the role of an ice hockey champ.” Akshay says, “The film expresses in a wonderful way the crossing of two great cultures. It has a brilliant international cast and crew, and I really feel this will touch a lot of hearts in Hollywood.” Breakaway is scheduled to launch in 2011 by Alliance Films in Canada and Hari Om Entertainment in India.
