'Panchayati Raj improves villages'

He was speaking at a University-level Seminar on ‘Panchayati Raj Institutions in Karnataka’ organised by PBMMPG in the city to celebrate the golden jubilee of Panchayati Raj system.

He said that even though the 11th finance commission allocated a big chunk of money to Grama Panchayats, it didn’t reach the villages as was expected.

He said that rural development represents the country’s development.Describing the challenges, Prof Renukarya said that participation of women in Grama Panchayat should be increased.

He said that while former prime minister, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru focussed on increasing manufacturing prowess of the country, it was Gandhiji who believed that providing rural mass with self-sufficiency was the best way to take the country forward.

Development should taken into consideration the balance in all the sectors, he added.
