Advani for simultaneous LS, Assembly elections

Last Updated 25 October 2010, 17:21 IST

Canvassing for BJP nominee Nityanand Rai from Hajipur, Advani said: “From 1952 to 1967, the Lok Sabha and state Assembly polls were held together. But Mrs Indira Gandhi discontinued this process when she went ahead with a mid-term election in March 1971.

Since then, conducting elections (separately) have become a big drain on the exchequer.
“Besides, the electorate too loses interest in frequent polls,” said Advani, recalling how he found the voters in Bihar a bit exhausted since they had seen 2009 Lok Sabha elections just 17 months back. “You reach a stage of fatigue if elections are held so frequently,” the BJP veteran added.
