BJP, JD(U) question CBI's independence

Last Updated 09 November 2010, 10:50 IST

Alleging political interference in CBI's functioning, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said the BJP had given notice during the last two sessions of Parliament for discussion on the issue but no debate had taken place.

She said her party has again given notice this time in the wake of so many corruption cases, like the Adarsh housing scam of Mumbai and Commonwealth Games scandals.

JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, while participating in the impromptu debate on Adarsh scam, said the "trust over CBI has been shattered."

Contending that CBI is not allowed to function independently, he said he was aware of this fact as his party also was in the government. He did not elaborate but was apparently referring to the NDA government of which JD(U) was a major ally.

He said the CBI should be made fully independent like the Election Commission as there was need for dealing sternly with corruption cases.
