"Nearly 45,000 court staff would be on strike tomorrow across the state. In Mumbai, over 1,500 employees from all lower courts will be on strike," Vandana Modak, president of Mumbai City Civil and Session Court Workers Union, said.

The employees are demanding a pay hike and extension of benefits of the Second National Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC) of Justice E Padmanabhan to the court staff.

Modak said that the Supreme Court had directed the state government in October last year to hike the salaries of the staff after the Commission had submitted its report to the apex court.

"The state government's approach towards the court staff has been lethargic," she said.
Principal Judge of the Sessions Court here, however, said the strike would not affect regular court proceedings.
