Announcing this here on Wednesday, Minister for Social Welfare A Narayana Swamy underscored the need to solve the livelihood problems of the oppressed classes.

“We'll have to come up with initiatives to uplift students belonging to the disadvantages groups. Unfortunately, opportunities in the public sector are shrinking. At the same time, multinational companies have been employing millions. It's time fresh graduates from the disadvantaged sections are provided with a secure livelihood option,” Narayana Swamy said at a function organised by Bangalore University's Department of Sociology.

Minister for Higher Education V S Acharya, who spoke on the occasion, stressed the need for optimal use of the human resources.

‘Key to development’

“Effective use of the human resources is the key to integrated development. For this, we must strengthen the higher education,” he said.

Acharya said while there are 6,000 universities in the United States, which has a population of just 31 crores, India, inhabited by 115 crore people, boasted of only 398 universities.
