BJP in a hurry to get assent

Last Updated 11 November 2010, 16:44 IST

After having launched a state-wide agitation to exert pressure on President Pratibha Patil to give assent to the bill, the government is now sending repeated reminders to the Home Ministry seeking its stamp of clearance for the legislation.

According to secretariat sources, as many as three reminders have been dispatched to the Home Ministry, which is presently scrutinising the bill, during the last three months.

However, there has been no response from the Home Ministry so far, the sources added.
The state legislature had passed the bill to ban cattle slaughter amidst opposition from political parties and various social organisations who said the measure was against certain sections of the society and their eating habits.

Governor H R Bhardwaj had forwarded the bill to the President to decide whether to approve the bill or not.
