From the branches of a Banyan tree hangs a jute bag, which, according to the frail-looking Barun, contains the body parts of his daughter Kusumari, who was “murdered”. According reports, Kusumari had an affair with a youth but when her family opposed it, a village panchayat was convened to settle the matter.

“The youth then assured the panchayat that he would marry Kusumari,” Barun said, adding that the couple left the village for an unknown destination in June 2009.

“Since then Kusumari’s whereabouts are not known. We also had come to know that Kusumari was sold to someone else by the youth,” Barun claimed.

Barun and his family alleged that Kusumari was hacked to death in collusion with some people from his village and her body was burnt. “I managed to reach the spot where Kusumari was burnt later on, and was able to collect some parts of her half- burnt body,” said the grieving father.

Since then, Barun has been running from pillar to post to get justice. “The police say that Kusumari is alive but they are not able to trace her whereabouts,” he said.

Probe on

The hapless father also approached the district court in Sonebhadra, which ordered the police to register a case and begin investigation.

The police have registered a case in this regard. “We are looking into the allegations of the family,” police said, adding that the skeletal remains could also be sent for forensic examination if needed.

On his part, Barun is determined to get justice. “I have put the body parts of Kusumari in a bag and hung them from the tree and have been guarding them... I intend to continue guarding the remains till I get justice and the culprits are brought to book,” he said.
