The disease has infected a total of 11,125 people nationwide, according to government figures released Thursday. The maximum number of fatalities, 497, has been in the northern province of Artibonite, where the cholera outbreak began.
Nine deaths have been reported in Port-au-Prince, where thousands of people have been living in refugee camps since the Jan 12 earthquake that killed 300,000 people and left one million homeless. According to tests performed by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the disease has been caused by bacteria found in south Asia.
