Doctors remove metal nails inserted in Sri Lankan maid's body

The doctors had initially removed nine metal nails out of 14 inserted into her arm and leg. Rest of the nails were removed today in an operation, Kurunegala hospital director Dr S Rajamanthri said.

38-year-old V R Lechchami, a mother of two, had returned to the country after working in Kuwait for two months.

This is the second such incident in the past few months. In August, another housemaid, T Ariyawathi, returned to the country from Saudi Arabia with 23 nails inserted into her body.

Meanwhile, another Sri Lankan maid has charged that her Jordanian employee forced her to swallow six nails.

Foreign Employment Bureau officials said that they are studying the report of a doctor, who was sent by the country to examine the maid, and are making arrangement to bring her back home.
