14 drown as holy dip, prayers mark Kartik Purnima

Ten, nine of them children, died in Orissa and two each in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during celebrations on the full moon day of Kartik month, officials in respective states said.
In holy town Ayodhya, devotees took a plunge in Saryu river and paid obeisance at temples, including famous shrines Kanak Bhawan and Hanumangarhi, illuminated on the occasion.

Seers from Prayag, Haridwar, Mathura, Kashi and all the seven Puris, sacred chairs of Hindu devotion, also took dip in the Saryu river.Kartik Mela, which started a week ago, culminated today in Faizabad town with no reports of any untoward incident in the past seven days.
Braving an early morning nip in the air, faithful took dip at Brijghat in Garhmukteshwar in Ghaziabad, Yamunagar in Haryana and the Sangam in Allahabad.

According to a Hindu legend, taking dip during Kartik Purnima cleanse devotees of their sins. Faithful also believe that on this day, gods descend on earth and reside in sacred rivers.
