Two brothers in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, about 325 kilometres from here, conspired to show their missing father, Doodhnath Chauhan, a gateman in the Railways, as ‘dead’ to claim funds and other benefits.

According to the plan, the younger brother, Vijay, was to claim the job and the funds were to go to the elder one, Manoj Chauhan. Reports said Doodhnath fell seriously ill in 1997 and went for treatment to Assam with Rs 9,000 that he got as bonus. He, however, never came back. The two brothers, meanwhile, hatched a conspiracy. They roped in the village chief and procured a death certificate from him. A witness was also arranged to testify before the officials vouching for them.

As per the plan, Vijay was to get the job and Manoj was to get a share in the funds and the land. Everything went according to the plan, as the duo was able to convince the authorities about the death of their father.

After getting the job, however, Vijay went back on his promise and kept all the money with him. Manoj also did not get the land.

As Vijay refused to honour the agreement, Manoj decided to spill the beans knowing fully well that he would also be in trouble. He approached the police and revealed the plot to them and later moved the court when the police did not take any action. The Railway officials also lodged a report with the police. After investigation, all accused, including the brothers, the village chief and the witness, were arrested on charges of forgery, conspiracy and other offences.
