Girl's 'tunnel vision' has village in religious frenzy

People in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district, about 400 km from here, dug a long tunnel after a girl in the village dreamt that there existed the idol of a deity underground.

Yogita from Garhi Rosu village had a dream in which she saw a deity lying under panchayat land behind the village temple.

Hundreds of people then assembled at the spot and dug out a 20-ft-long and 5-ft-deep tunnel within three days in the hope of unearthing the idol.

People who assembled at the spot were seen singing devotional songs.
Some of the villagers later claimed that a six-inch-long deity of a goddess was found at the end of the tunnel. A few, however, rubbished the claims.

“Now, the girl has claimed that the six-inch-long idol will acquire a big shape within eight days,” said the locals.

The district administration has taken a serious view of the digging of panchayat land without permission.
