Time for some sweet surprise

Chinmayi Vasavi Mahila Mandali, in association with Relish, a low-calorie sweetener, had organised the contest.

The aim was to use minimum calorie sweetener in the dishes which will help the diabetics enjoy sweets without having to worry about the calories and carbohydrates. This was also done to encourage calorie-free cooking among the people.

Nearly 70 participants took part in the competition and dished up some mouth-watering delicacies.

H S Shashidhara, Regional Sales Manager of Relish, said “This contest is organised to make people aware of the value of cooking with diet-free sugar and help the calorie conscious and diabetics relish sweets without worrying about putting on weight.”

The participants made various sweets using innovative methods with minimum time. Yashodha Srinivas, a homemaker and a home science graduate who is also an expert at making sweets, was present at the occasion to judge the event.

Twenty-five marks were allotted for the contest. Five marks each for taste, display, texture, ingredients, and for innovative method of cooking. The decoration was done using various dry fruits.

The delicacies included snowball pudding, rava burfi, rava ladu, aloo burfi, beetroot halwa, ragi holige, anjoor halwa, amla halwa, egg less chocolate -walnut brownie, cashew-almond ladu, sweet potato vada, carrot delight roll, pineapple pudding, khova kobri holige, dry jamun and others.

Naga Pranitha, a homemaker, who won the first place for ragi holige was elated, “This is the first time I participated in such a contest and never thought I would win. For me participation was important. I made a simple dish from ragi and it is surprising that it was recognised as the best. I am very happy that I got the first prize for it,” she said. Sujatha R, president, Chinmayi Vasavi Mahila Mandali said, “We usually conduct such contests every month in our organisation. I am happy to be one among the winners. It is a collective effort from everyone who participated here.  It gives us an opportunity to explore and exchange new ideas on cooking.”

All the sweets were made using diet-free sugar. The top five winners were Naga Pranitha for ragi holige, Savitha for amla halwa, Sujatha for cashew-almond laddu, Swapna for pineapple pudding, and Sindhu for beetroot dry jamun. Consolation prizes were given to six participants.
