It is bought, sold and gifted to people of all age groups. Gold has an interesting history to it. In a dark and lifeless universe, the creator deposited a seed in the waters he had made from his own body. The seed became a golden egg, bright and radiant as the sun. From this cosmic egg of gold was born the incarnation of the creator himself — Brahma. From the root word Hri meaning imperishable, comes Hiranya, the ancient name for gold. Brahma is referred to as Hiranyagarbha — the one born of gold.

In Hindu mythology, some of our goddesses are described as golden-hued, the ultimate in beauty. Gold is believed to be the basis of so much purity and beauty and is referred to as the seed of Agni, the God of Fire. Manu, the ancient law-giver, decreed that golden ornaments should be worn for specific ceremonies and occasions. Mythological tales tell us how our gods and goddesses rode on golden chariots. Gold has always been considered a sacred item in the Hindu way of life and is a must during every religious function. People believe that gold is pure having passed through fire in its process of evolution.

In India, gold is regarded as the ultimate symbol of wealth and prosperity. Traditionally, buying gold jewellery is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, the birthday of Parasuram and one of the most auspicious days of the year. This day is celebrated among all Indians, irrespective of their caste and religion. According to some, Lord Indra, the king of Devas, worshipped Lord Mahavishnu for granting eternal prosperity, strength and peace under the advice of sages to set off this ancient tradition. Gold is the only thing that seeps into every strata and class of the Indian society. The purchase of gold in India is intertwined with various cultural notions. Buying gold for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, festivals, or as an offering to Indian deities is common.

It is difficult to attribute a single emotion to this yellow miracle. However, it is more than evident that its splendour is true and beyond comparison.
