Model AYUSH villages on cards

One such programme, which will be undertaken on a pilot basis, is model Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy (AYUSH) villages.

Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas said though still in the proposal stage, the programme envisages one village panchayat in each district to be adopted by an Ayurvedic college along with AYUSH directorate and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. They will coordinate with the panchayat raj institutions, NGOs and district administration.

"The first model village will be D B Kuppe, HD Kote taluk in Mysore. We are still in the process of sanctioning the funds but the project will start in January, 2011," the minister said, while interacting with mediapersons regarding on the 4th World Ayurvedic Congress. He said priority would be given to remote  villages with tribal population. 

AYUSH, under the aegis of Medical Education Department, has also proposed to set up a pharma city and special economic zone for pharma industry to cater to small and medium scale industries. One section of the pharma city and SEZ will be dedicated to AYUSH drug manufacturing units and also export-oriented units. The State government has accepted the proposal made by Union government to set up an All India Institute of AYUSH Medical Sciences in the State.

The Union government will provide Rs 10 crore while the State’s share will be Rs 10 crore.  Ayurvedic university and Centre for Ayurvedic and medicinal plants near HD Kote or Shimoga are other proposals.
