'Dip in enrolment due to non-availability of textbooks'

 Addressing an orientation programme for translators in Kannada organised by the NTM at the St Aloysius College here on Tuesday, Srinivasacharya said that as most of the textbooks are available in English, students in many parts of the nation find it difficult to understand.
“The main objective of the NTM is educating translators through orientation programmes and promote translation of textbooks from English to local languages. Different translation theories, translation techniques and issues related to translation are imparted to translators,” he added.  

He said that the professional translation requires special skill. “The translation of knowledge texts differ largely from the translation of literary works. The ultimate aim of a translator should be to make readers understand the subject,” he said adding that the NTM has identified 69 disciplines, where emphasis should be given for translation of texts from English to Indian languages.

In his address, St Aloysius College Vice-Principal Dr A Lourdusamy said that before Independence, the nation was lagging behind in education due to the ignorance of Indian languages by the Colonial policy makers. Prof Shivaram Padikkal, Professor at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS) of the University of Hyderabad delivered talk on ‘Theories and Techniques of Translation’. St Aloysius College Principal Fr Swebert D’Silva presided.
