Hence, classroom-based assessment or evaluation, in addition to term-end or annual examinations, gains much significance.

Classroom-based assess-ment, also known as authentic, performance, continuous, dynamic and multiple assessment, refers to the procedures for evaluating learner performance using activities and tasks that represent classroom goals, curricula and instruction.

It is distinct from traditional tests in its nature and characteristics. It may be viewed as an alternative to traditional testing.

Traditional standardised tests are specifically single event, multiple choice tests that result in numerical scores or a set of grades and the ranking of individuals.

In such tests, learners are treated uniformly and decisions are based on single sets of data (test scores). They are generally one-shot examinations that focus on the 'right answer' and the judgement is made without suggestions for improvement.

On the other hand, classroom-based assessment is an integral part of the teaching-learning process where learners are treated individually and multiple sources of data are used for marking.

The assessment is ongoing and continuous and there are possibilities of several perspectives. Such assessments allow teachers more space for developing the curricula and instead of tests and examinations, alternative forms of evaluation such as anecdotal records, checklists, journals, learning logs, etc., are used.

Purpose

Classroom-based assessment can serve many purposes:

*Initial diagnosis
*Ongoing diagnosis
*Ongoing collection of evi-dence leading to information sharing
*Remedial action
*Ongoing collection of evidence of progress in learning leading to reporting
*Feedback on the effect-iveness of teaching methods and materials used for transaction

Methods

The following are some of the ways to carry out classroom-based evaluation:

*Observation
*Conferences
*Interactive journals
*Portfolios
*Self-assessments/ Checklists
*Learning logs
*Narrative
*Project work
*Interviews

As classroom evaluation is continuous, it reveals the strengths and weaknesses of learners and provides them better opportunities to under-stand and improve themselves.

It is important to remember that not all forms of assessment are useful for collecting all kinds of information.

We need to decide which method or combination of methods is most appropriate for a particular purpose at a particular time.

It is unfair and unscientific to rely solely on scores or grades obtained in tests and examinations to decide about the academic growth and development of students.
It is important to use multiple sources of information while taking decisions that impact a student’s academic future.
