Speaking after receiving the felicitation organised by Milagres Church Centenary Celebration Committee, The Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK) and RACHANA (Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Margaret Alva said that the Alva family had to move to Uttar Karnataka due to elections as they were not given a chance in Mangalore. “I was never into politics but was roped in due to the family tradition. I have seen many ups and downs from then, but I can walk with my head held high as no one can point a finger at me and my name has not appeared in any of the scam lists,” she added.

Speaking about her father, Alva said that she was taught the values of honesty, sincerity and hard work. “Many a times, I felt like giving up, but my husband was the strength behind me,” she said and added that she always stood up for her convictions.

Alva further added that a long battle was fought to add Konkani in the eighth schedule and now Konkani is one of the recognised languages in the Constitution.

“Margaret is glory to Mangalore diocese, boost of Konkani community and pride of Catholics in India,” said Bishop Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza after honouring Margaret Alva with a citation. He further added that she has learnt the qualities of mind and heart from her parents and has manifested them throughout her life. She is a good wife, mother and with her words and actions, she is giving witness to Christian faith. Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry former President Captain John Prasad Menezes introduced Margaret Alva to the guests. CASK President Dr Derek lobo read out the citation.

Various Catholic organisations felicitated Governor Alva with flowers. The formal programme was followed by a finale which included performances by school children.
