Speaking after inaugurating Late Ammembala Subba Rao Pai Memorial national seminar on Concept of Brahmana, organised by Canara College Centre for Inter Disciplinary Studies and Research in Sanskrit in association with Samskrutha Shodha Sadhana (Samshodhana), Sirsi here on Sunday, Acharya said that the concept of Brahmana is based on ‘inclusive thinking.’ “The Brahmana concept has been misunderstood and misinterpreted in the society. As per the Vedas, a man is not considered as Brahmana by birth, but he becomes a Brahmana only when he attains knowledge and thinks about the welfare of the world. However, unfortunately the things have changed gradually and today Brahmana is linked with a caste,” he stated.

Stressing on the need for equality, Acharya said that time has arrived to change the things and set them alright.

Prof Gautham Patel from Ahmadabad, delivering his keynote address said that none of the four Vedas mention anywhere that Shudras belong to lower strata of society. Drawing few examples to support his view, he said, “No Maharshi and great scholars of the past including Valmiki were Brahmanas by birth. They were credited with Brahmanya for the sheer knowledge they possessed and their motto to bring welfare in the society.”

The two-day seminar intends to discuss the concept of Brahmana in Smrtis and Sutras, in Shastragranthas, in Ramayana and Mahabharata, in classical Sanskrit literature and concept of Brahmana according to modern thinkers.
